According to Kevin Markarian, AIA, Principal, "AERO draws upon the signature forms and materials of the historic Alameda Naval Air Station and features a dramatic 60-foot-tall butterfly roof to act as a landmark at its most prominent corner.” Markarian went on to add, “The building’s massing and recesses were designed to echo the rhythms of the well-patinaed naval hangars, which have become home to retailers, manufacturers, marine science facilities, fitness centers, and a growing list of craft distilleries, wineries, and breweries, earning the area the moniker of ‘Spirits Alley.’ AERO Apartments’ finishes include corrugated siding as an ode to the historic structures; metal sunscreens to enhance the industrial character while providing natural cooling to the apartments; and bold maritime colors to harmonize with the waterfront backdrop.”
Bringing the exterior industrial and aeronautic motifs into the residential amenity spaces, Parisa O’Connell Interior Design delivers amenity spaces that are strong and bold, yet light, elegant, and welcoming. “Our overall design philosophy began with an art nouveau style to introduce dynamism and movement into the vast amenity spaces and then we gave them a more mid-century feel to be genuine to the architecture and harken back to the chic heyday of air travel,” noted Parisa O’Connell. All furniture and lighting fixtures are composed of geometric shapes and sharp angles that create movement within their forms. Custom rugs with swooping lines contrast with polished concrete floors and represent flight patterns across the sky. A long, shared hallway connecting the amenity spaces features a curtain of glass showcasing the landscaped interior courtyard, and together with repeated signature pendant lighting along the ceiling creates a dynamic concourse with runway lighting to tie it all together.
